Review: Fox by Margaret Wild

Fox by Margaret Wild

Pictures by Ron Brooks

A breathtaking story of friendship, love, risk and betrayal.

This is a lovely story of 2 friends, Dog and Magpie who both have a disability. They learn to live together and each becomes the others strength. They soon become firm friends and then they meet Fox. Fox promises everything and manages to find a way into this strong friendship. Magpie soon learns that the friends who may not offer the world are the ones worth having, and finds the strength within to make things right.

This is a lovely book, with a lot of messages for children to be encouraged to find and discuss. It has spectacular and relevant pictures (not the usual bright and colourful ones found in kid’s books – but they are very appropriate to the story). The only thing I struggled with, with this book was the way the writing was printed, I know it matches the pictures and story but I found it quite distracting when reading it to the children. And being avid readers themselves they found it challenging in that respect also.

My book rating: 3.5/5 Well worth reading.
